Common Steel Materials and Their Characteristics
The material for shredder blades should be selected based on the target material (such as plastic, metal, or biomass), workload, and cost. The following are the mainstream materials and their applicable applications:
65Mn spring steel: Offers excellent elasticity and wear resistance, achieving a heat-treated hardness of HRC52-55. It is suitable for general shredders and processes soft materials such as plastics and rubber, offering a low cost.
9CrSi alloy steel: High hardness and impact resistance, achieving a heat-treated hardness of HRC52-55. It is suitable for shredding fibers, paper, or medium-hard plastics, offering a cost-effective solution.
SK5/T10 Tool Steel: Higher hardness (HRC 55-58) and excellent toughness. Suitable for high-powered crushers processing large plastic products or hard materials such as sheets and pipes.
Cr12MoV Alloy Steel: Excellent wear and high-temperature resistance, with a heat-treated hardness of HRC 58-62. Suitable for pelletizers or high-load applications, such as PE and PVC plastic pellets.
Carbide (Tungsten Carbide): Highest hardness (HRC 58-62) and excellent wear resistance, but also high brittleness. Suitable for crushing soft materials containing glass fiber or rubber-like materials, but not recommended for hard materials.
Key Factors in Material Selection
The following factors should be considered when selecting steel:
Characteristics of the material being crushed:
1 Soft materials such as plastics and rubber: 65Mn or 9CrSi are preferred, balancing wear resistance and toughness.
2 Metals or high-hardness materials: Cr12MoV or carbide are preferred for impact resistance.
3 Biomass (e.g., corn cobs): Consider SK5 or 6CrW2Si for both wear and corrosion resistance.
Performance and Cost:
1. Cost-Effective Options: 65Mn and 9CrSi are low-cost and suitable for small- to medium-scale production.
2. Long-Life Options: Carbide or coated inserts (e.g., TiC or TiN coatings) can extend service life, but at a higher cost.
3. Heat Treatment: All materials require heat treatment to control hardness, e.g., HRC 52-55 for standard inserts and HRC 55-58 for harder inserts to match the intensity of the work.
